Andrew Ritchie starts designing a folding bike in his flat overlooking the Brompton Oratory in South Kensington, London
1977
The first designs
The first Brompton bikes are fairly crude but fold neatly and conveniently into a tiny package. It is a remarkable step forward in folding bike design.
1981
Production begins
Low volume, ad-hoc production begins.
1988
The first factory
Full time production commences in units set in railway arches in Brentford, West London.
1987
Recognition
Brompton is awarded with the coveted Best Product Award at the Cyclex event held at Olympia, London.
1995
Royal Recognition
Brompton receives Queen’s Award for Export Achievement.
2003
Long distance
A Brompton is ridden at the South Pole.
2006
And they're off
The first Brompton World Championship race is held in Barcelona.
2011
Going global
The first Brompton Junction store opens in Kobe, Japan. First Brompton Bike Hire station opens in Guildford.
2013
London Calling
Brompton Junction Covent Garden, London opens,the sixth worldwide.

Changing gears
